How will I make use of a Marketing/Management degree if there are so much competition out there?
Because there are so many people out there that are majoring either in Marketing or Management, it's so hard to stand out or differentiate yourself from others. The worst part is that there aren't any reassurance that you'll get the job you want after you get your degree. Now it's either you stand out or let them eat you alive. Is it true that people with a Management degree have more of a variety of jobs to choose from and are more flexible because it's a broad field, and people with a Marketing degree are stuck with jobs only pertaining to the Marketing field and are less flexible? At first I wanted to major in IT, but then I felt like my chances of breaking into that industry is very slim because of comments about a lot of jobs being offshored and plus I'm very much a beginner, which makes me ignorant about the industry. Today companies look for IT people with a lot of experience with computers, which I certainly don't have. I'm confused about whether I should major in Mktg or Mgmt.

Have you read the book, RICH DAD, POOR DAD? it will tell you not to get a job, create jobs. People mainly think that the way to make millions is to work up the ladder. That's why there are so many poor people. Millionaires use their marketing skills to market their companies. I think you should find a subject that teaches you to be a millionaire.

hello there buddy... i see that you are having a hard time in choosing what degree to choose so that after you graduate you will have a job, the answer there is simple, in choosing the degree that you want, know first what you want, try to examine yourself first, try to ask open ended questions like where am i good at? do i like doing this? am i satisfied with what i am doing? before you come up with a decision, this questions surely helps... I have been working for a year now and to tell you honestly, its not "landing a job" that you should think, but "what would be your career goals" after you land a job, if you are thinking of my first predicament, well we working here in a company thinks on what will happen on our careers, we often asking ourselves "am i going to do this stuff for the rest of my life?" Having a job is only a objective but it is not your main goal... try to re-focus your concerns.... I can see that you will have a good career in any field that you want as long you are dedicated, committed, discipline and hardwork...Good Luck and Best Wishes pal!

I have a degree in Marketing and have worked in at least 2 marketing agencies. But from my experience, turnover is high because a lot of agencies lose clients after one project, so already I've been laid off twice. I also notice that many marketing agencies hire interns and recent college grads. There's not a lot of older professionals in a marketing agency, giving me the impression that they only want young people for cheap labor and they eventually lay off employees when they get more expensive.

It taught me to see human beings as a resource. Now I can look upon them as tools of industry and business without having to acknowledge their humanity. I can reduce people (workers) to basic spreadsheet equations measuring the relative short term gains of business without being bothered by concern for their livelihood and their families. Business education is a great way to lose your compassion and humanity.

That's my major, and you are right...you'll earn more with a degree in it. For you, already having managerial experience is a huge plus. That combined with your degree, you should have no problem finding a management position. As for what kind of jobs are out there for management majors, there are tons of them! That's the biggest reason I chose this as my major. I would either like to go into hotel management or open my own business, not quite sure yet! But good luck in whatever you decide to do!!! Depends where you get the degree from. If it's from Wharton, MIT or Stern like schools, they will huant you down for executive positions. If it's from average state U, those grads are usually called waiter,

I understand why people ask what kinds of jobs they can get with degrees like history or Philosophy. But I don't understand why they ask what kinds of jobs they can get with a degree in Business Management. Isn't it kind of obvious from the name? It is even more obvious if you specialize in one of the concentrations. Accounting majors get jobs in accounting. Finance majors get jobs in finance. Marketing majors get jobs in marketing. Operations management majors get jobs in operations. Strategy majors get jobs in strategic development or in management consulting. Do you really not understand this?

I am currently enrolled at a community college and I need to find a school by next year. I want to be a human resource manager so I am majoring on business adminstration. There are very few schools to choose from that actually offer a human resource program but there are a lot of schools that offer business management. Can I become and HR manager with that degree? Do the business degree then a Masters in HRM eg http://business.fiu.edu/chapman/master_of_science_in_hrm.cfm You will get a higher starting salary and have better career prospects. Use the money you saved by going to a CC first to pay for it. In fact admission to such programs requires a degree in anything. So suit yourself about what you study. That is one of the advantages of doing a Masters - your undergrad is often more liberal. Thanks Bill
